Willa's First Soilds

I'm pretty sure I thought long and hard about starting Connor on solids. I got one of those baby food makers and took my job of making him nutritious and delicious combinations very seriously. By the time we got to Callum, I threw table scraps at him and called it good. Then there's Willa. I always aim to start my kids on solids around six months old. And I don't do baby cereal, as research says it's unnecessary and unfortunately full of arsenic. I hadn't thought much about exactly when I would start Willa and what her first food would be. But the other night, sitting at the dinner table, half of an avocado was left and I just decided to go for it.

Clearly she didn't like it ;) She had a hard time picking it up, so I handed it to her instead. Even then, it kept flying out of her hand. In her mouth, she managed to get a couple big bites, but I think most of it ended up coming back out. Overall, she seemed extremely satisfied with her first experience. Now for the fun to begin! Well, not too much fun until she gets some teeth in. No pizza for this girl yet!

Callum Feeds Himself

^^ This may be my favorite picture ever! He isn't angry here, but actually holding up his bowl, screaming in pure joy.

The other day, I put Callum in his high chair to feed him and he literally went crazy. He was screaming and kicking and throwing himself around. Yeah, that toddler will has come roaring to the surface of my adorable babe. I had a feeling the real problem was that he wanted to feed himself. I tried handing him the spoon with some oatmeal on it, but he wanted the bowl too. So, I pulled him out, stripped him down, then put him back in his chair again and let him go to town.

Though he attempted to use his spoon a few times, he mostly just used his hand to scoop up the oatmeal and put it in his mouth. Then he would lick his fingers and start all over again. It was actually quite comical to watch. Aww, the messy stage of learning to feed yourself. It's fun when you have time to clean, but doing a deep cleaning of the house and a babe after every meal can get a little tiring. It comes with the territory though.

And if you want to see Callum in action, here is a short video clip of him eating his oatmeal.

Callum's First Doughnut

Last week, on September 19th to be exact, Callum had his first doughnut. It was national talk like a pirate day and every year Krispy Kreme gives away a dozen doughnuts if you come in dressed like a pirate. Every year I am blown away that they try to give a box for each child (well, and adults too) when one box is way more than enough. So, just like last year, we only took the one box. And we luckily went into Krispy Kreme just before a couple adults walked in with like thirty kids. Score for us…well really score for my kids because I totally would not have waited in line that long!

When we got home, I decided to let Callum partake in a doughnut. Honestly, he was way more into the peach I gave him the other day than the doughnut. He didn't seem to like touching it much. Which, it was fresh and very sticky. And he really didn't eat much of it before completely loosing interest. But, it made for some cute pictures and isn't that what really matters?!

Just look at that first picture, so curious what's in the box. He was probably so curious because we were so excited to give it to him!

I am such a sucker for all these minor firsts in my kids lives and totally love documenting it, even if I get made fun of from time to time for doing so…yep, a mom at Isla's preschool made fun of me for always having my camera. I'll just chalk it up to jealousy ;)

From sweet potatoes to ice cream

We work fast around here, what can I say?

It started with sweet potatoes less than two weeks ago and now the kid is devouring whole ice cream cones all on his own. So, maybe that's a slight exaggeration. But somehow Callum just knows when people around him are eating delicious food and tries to claw his way to it. My mom did indulge and let him take a couple sucks of ice cream and he seemed in heaven.

Outside of ice cream though, he has now had sweet potatoes, carrots, peas, pear, apple and apple-blueberry. I have to say he wasn't a fan of the peas at all. He was literally blocking the spoon from coming in his mouth after a couple bites. It's pretty funny given that if he gets something he likes, he gobbles it right up. I even tasted the peas and thought they tasted fine, but to each his own. I also let him suck on sweet peppers, carrots and snap peas. After a while, he manages to actually munch into them with that toothless bite of his, then I take them away.

It's funny how much you just forget in four years. I really don't remember the specifics of how I fed Isla (of course, thankfully I have a blog to remind me). But I am kind of just taking it as it goes, because, I don't exactly have countless hours anymore to research all the things.

Callum's First Food

After waiting far too long, I finally gave Callum "real food" on Monday. At first I was trying to wait until 6 months to give him food. Then, it was like, well he turns 6 months in Hawaii, so I should wait until we get home. Then there was the chaos of moving. And, well, sitting in the chaos of boxes, I decided I could use a fun distraction and decided to go for it.

The above pictures are in order…Callum was excited about the food coming toward his mouth, unsure after the first bite, then got excited and was ready for more! I let Connor chose what food we would give first and after a riveting round of "eenie meenie" sweet potatoes it was.

I am a more fly by the seat of my pants mom and don't have any sort of plan for when and how much I will feed him. On Monday I fed him until he seemed to be spitting it all out. And on Tuesday, I fed him until the container was gone. All I know is I will be skipping baby cereal…I skipped it with Isla as well (can't remember why) and after the reports of how high arsenic is in it, I decided to skip it this time as well. But, I am hoping that Callum will cut some teeth shortly, so then I can feed him some pizza…I kid.

Avocado Be Good

In our house, avocado is a staple just like milk. I kid you not. It is that important to us. I am guessing it has something to do with both Ian and I being raised in California. Connor wasn't a fan of avocado for the longest time, though now he will gobble it up like the rest of us. But Isla, she is a smart one. She instantly took to avocado. Maybe it has something to do with her being a California native...hmmm...

Slimy avocado can be a bit of a challenge for chubby little fingers to go after.

But it's so good, it's worth the effort.

In fact, it is so good, if your fingers just can't seem to grab it,

you should just use your mouth!

If only you knew how much pleasure I got out of watching Isla trying to eat the avocado off the table! Avocado be good though and totally worth it. And I'll be honest, I've been known to lick a guacamole bowl clean a time or two. I told you, that green stuff be good!

Super Mom Failure

Once I realized how economical it was to make baby food rather than buy it, I started making all Connor's baby food. And as weird as it sounds, I had fun doing it. I made up my own recipes and enjoyed doing it. The one thing I never made for him though was baby cereal. When I realized how easy it is to make, I just knew I wanted to try it with Isla.

Now that Isla is six months old, I was all excited to let her try some food. I pulled out our blender the other day to make her some rice cereal. In the middle of blending up the rice, I decided to go all Jamba Juice on the blender and shake it. In the process of shaking it, I managed to pull the pitcher off the teeth that spin the blender. And in doing so, I managed to break all the teeth off it. Talk about an epic failure.

So, until I get a new part for my blender, Isla will have to deal with store bough rice cereal. I hope she doesn't grow a third eye or something...I kid. Anyway, here is Isla getting her first taste at some real food.

She is obsessed with holding the spoon herself and putting it in her mouth. Such a smart baby. She knows how to feed herself! Ha, ha! She also forces all the food out of her mouth with her tongue. I don't think it has anything to do with if she likes it or not, but just that she doesn't know how to eat. So weird to think that you have to learn to eat. At least she looks cute while learning!
