Callum Got Shoes

Somehow I made it this far in my parenting journey without ever having a baby get their feet measured. This past week, my mother in law and I took the kids to get new shoes. I wasn't planning on Callum getting any. After all, he doesn't walk and they are overpriced anyway. Then I sat there in the store, staring at the adorable pint sized sandals and I totally caved. So, I asked the shoe lady to measure Callum's feet…of course, at the same time I asked how one measures baby feet. I am pretty sure the lady thought I was crazy. But, I certainly can't be the only person on the planet that didn't know they use the exact same metal shoe measurer for everyone…please tell me I am not the only one! Someone? Anyone? Moving on.

They put Callum's tiny little foot up to the shoe measurer and determined that a size 2 should give him more than enough growing room to get him through the summer. Then I made the hard choice of what color…I went with navy. I figure it not only is a good boy color, but it's also a good neutral color. And, I must have been right because I have put them on his feet pretty much every day since.

I feel like I should mention that my other kids have had their feet measured many times, just not as babies. They were already walking when I had that done. So, I guess I thought for sure there must be a special little measuring device for babies. Obviously I was wrong.

Now I am questioning everything I thought I once knew in life. I mean, if I didn't know how they measured babies feet, what else am I missing out on?!

Buy Now, Thank Me Later

One of the first things I did when I moved back to the states was get me some toms...because, well, all the cool kids had them. And it didn't take long for those amazingly comfortable shoes to stink oh-so-bad. And other than my super rad (and super honest) friend Karen, no one else would admit that their toms made their feet smell. I eventually wore out those toms and moved on.

After living without toms for a while, I decided I wanted another pair in my life. When at the store buying them, the lady mentioned that toms are supposed to be worn with socks. Uh, what?! I then admitted to her that my last pair smelled not so good and she convinced me to get some socks to wear with them. Let me just say, these socks have changed my life! I can now wear toms AND not have stinky feet (and shoes).

So for all of you stinky feeted tom-lovers out there, you are welcome. Go get you some little tiny socks for your toms and you will thank me...and so will anyone else that has to smell your feet after you wear your toms. And for all of you that don't have stinky feet from toms, whatever. I still don't believe you.

The Shoe Situation

When walking out the door the other day, Ian said, "It's raining outside, are you sure you want to wear those?" Looking down I saw this...

My trusted rainbows. I responded with something like, "Are you kidding me Ian?!? When we were in college we lived in these shoes, despite the weather." Plus, there is a reality over here, if I didn't wear my rainbows when it was raining, I would never be able to wear them! In the past 3 weeks, we have only had one day without rain. And on that day, I drug Connor out of the house as fast as possible to get to the park to enjoy some sunshine!

This "summer" I even got Connor a pair of sandals. And I put them on him all the time! He needs to realize that he is part Californian and in California we wear sandals...even when it is cold or raining outside! Okay, if it was as cold in California as it is in Scotland, I am sure we wouldn't wear sandals all the time, but you get the picture!

Oh, and if you are wondering about my polish-free toes, I haven't had a pedicure since moving to Scotland 3 years ago! You don't wear sandals that often. :)

I'm Bringing 2000 Back...

I am a compulsive shopper. Not one of those people who goes out to look for "key" pieces for my wardrobe or goes home to think about buying something. If I like it, I buy it. The thing with shopping like this is you never know what will become your favorite item or what will be the biggest waste of money.

Lately, with my feet increasing in size, my normal shoes just haven't been as comfortable as they once were. So, I scowered through my closet for another option. And, out popped some Doc Martin mary janes circa 2000. I remember buying these bad boys. My family was on a European vacation and I picked them up at a store in London. Years ago, I sported them all the time. But, it has been years (seriously, like 5 or 6 years) since I have worn them. Well, since rediscovering them, I have been unable to wear anything else! They are roomy, comfortable, don't give me blisters, and being that they are white, they go with everything. At this point, I should also mention, when I pulled them out of the closet, they had a thick layer of dust on them and needed to be cleaned. But, being the special guys that they are, they cleaned up right away.

I say all this to say, it is so hard for me to ever get rid of anything from my closet. I really am one of those people who will discover something years later and start rocking it again. Because of this, it is always hard for me to part with absolutely anything. And since I have this oddly good memory and can tell you when and where I bought everything in my closet, I always know what year I am rocking...and I am not ashamed!
