Callum's First Haircut

After more than two years, Callum finally got his first haircut. The kid didn't have much hair to begin with, but really could have used a haircut for at least the past month. But you know, life, holidays, anything and everything got in the way. But Sunday was the day and he finally got it done. Like the total nerd that I am, I wanted it done with Ian there so one of us could take pictures and the other could help with Callum. We took him to one of those places that has a car for him to sit in.

Callum was super jazzed about the car. That is, until we went to buckle him into it. Then it was no longer cool. He started crying and trying to get out. Thankfully, he calmed down as long as one of us was holding his hand. He actually did pretty dang good during the haircut...I mean, for a two year old.

Here's a little before to remind you of what we were starting with:

^^ the first snip...yes, I kept the first snip of hair, even if Ian thinks I am weird for doing so.

And the after:

And just because I'm me, here's to looking back at Connor and Isla's first haircuts. Connor's was at 7 months old and Isla's at three years old. Both kids had so much more hair than Callum as babies. But I'm pretty sure Connor didn't really need to start getting haircuts at 7 months old, but #firsttimeparents.

Isla Got a Haircut

Isla was given an unplanned haircut courtesy of Connor yesterday.

I was "watching" a friend's two boys…obviously not watching the kids close enough! All four kids were playing in the backyard. I was sitting just inside the back door, eating my lunch. Connor comes in and asks if he can cut Isla's hair. I reply no and tell him to bring me the scissors (which obviously don't belong outside…or being played with) and when I say this, Connor's friend yells from the backyard, "Do you want Isla's hair too?" So I call for Isla to come to me and this is what I am greeted with…

I'm not sure I will even know exactly what went down in the backyard. But, that's what happens when you are dealing with two five year olds, a four year old and a three year old. I am 99% certain that Connor did the cutting. I know Isla asked that he not cut her braid, so he didn't…and that braid ended up being her saving grace (more on that later). Connor's friend also thought it would be a good idea to use the hair to make a wig…I'm not sure if this was thought of after the cutting or was the cause of the cutting. Either way, what's done is done.

I actually said to Connor that perhaps I should have Isla cut his hair too. To which he replied, "But she doesn't know how to cut hair." And I said, "And you do?!" And the kid totally had the nerve to reposed with a, "Yes." Oh man, this kid.

When Isla realized that her hair could not actually be reattached, she fell to the ground crying. It was pretty sad actually. After I couldn't get ahold of my hair girl, I called a friend that used to cut my hair and begged her to help. Thankfully she obliged. After she saw Isla, she told me that often times moms exaggerate in situations like this, but that I did not. On the way to get Isla's hair fixed, Connor randomly said from the back of the car, "Mom…you never told me NOT to cut Isla's hair." Oh man boy, don't turn this one back on me!

After seeing Isla and taking out her braid, my friend decided rather than cutting all of Isla's hair super short, to move her part more toward the center and create a bob. Admittedly, you can still tell where the short chop on one side was, but it turned out so much better than I was imagining. I was seriously thinking she was going to end up with a pixie cut.

I have to admit, it looks cute. It just isn't what I am used to. And I am going to miss those pigtails, the big ponytail down her back, and even the topknot on her head. Sigh.

Isla's First Haircut

^^ This is actually an after picture.

Isla had her first haircut yesterday. It was such a different experience that any of Connor's haircuts. Isla acted like a seasoned pro and loved the attention that was lavished on her. She even had conversations with her hairdresser. The part that really caught me off guard is that she was totally ok with having her hair blow dried. Girlfriend will barely let me get her hair in a ponytail half the time! I was so proud of her, yet a little taken aback by how grown up she seemed.

And sorry, not sorry, about all the pictures. Isla just looked so dang cute. I still can't get over the adorableness.

 ^^ The first cut.

All in all, Isla had about three inches taken off. She still has some of the baby layers left (it would have to be about shoulder length to not have any layers). But at least now her hair is all healthy. And now it has truly been proven that she is ALL GIRL and loves being pampered on at the salon. I am equally smitten with this and nervous for her teenage years.

In case you care, here is the post from when Connor got his first haircut...at 7 months old.

Connor Got His Hair Cut

Connor getting his hair cut isn't necessarily anything monumental. After all, I get my hair cut all the time now that I have short hair and I never seem to mention it. BUT, Connor got his hair cut and did not have a psychotic episode. He sat there like a normal person and let us cut his hair. Sure, he complained. However, he didn't bury his head into his lap, try to slap the clippers out of our hands or run. I call this a victory!!!

Usually I wait as long as possible before tackling Connor's hair because it is just so dramatic and taxing on all of us. But, this time was so much better. Of course, when I told Connor how proud of him I was, he responded, "But I didn't like it." Well kid, I'm still proud! And judging by the look on his face, I would say he was happy with the end result.

A Life Changing Toddler Hair Tip

We can all agree that Isla has herself a crazy amount of hair for her age. And, well, I have never exactly been great at doing my own hair, so the thought of doing another person's kind of overwhelmed me. But, we were taking it one day at a time and managing. The only problem was, the longer it got, the more she fought me to brush it. Then, one day while perusing Target (actually running toward the register with a non-compliant child in tow...but, you know) something caught my eye...

Suave detangler. This stuff is magic, I tell you. I can use on both dry and wet hair. I don't know how it does it, but I spray it on and magically the brush easily glides through Isla's hair. Like I said, magic. If you have a child of any age who's hair you are still brushing and it is a challenge, I recommend running out and grabbing yourself a bottle of this stuff. You can thank me later. Oh, and I find the apple scent divine, but I know there is another sent as well.

By the way, this post is completely unsponsored. But given that this may have been the best $2 I have ever spent, I thought I should share the love...cause us mom's gotta help each other out, right?!?

True Friends

True friends are the one's you call to help you out when you screwed up your son's hair trying to cut it yourself. They help you fix it without judgement. I would know. This just happened to me.

The other night while giving Connor a bath, it was bugging me that his bangs were in his eyes. So, I decided to cut them. In the bath, they looked fine. When he woke up the next morning, I stared in horror at what I had done to my poor son.

The problem was, I didn't want to "fix" them because I was afraid he would end up with no hair in the front. So I called my friend and headed over to her house where she helped fix Connor's hair.

He is now the proud owner of a little boy hair cut. No side swept baby/old man style hair for him anymore! And it was so easy, I am thinking of buying some clippers for myself and keeping that boy's hair short!

Fall Fashion Week {Day 7}

Better late than never, right?

Today both Connor and I got our hair cut. And, you are lucky enough to get before & after shots. Well, not a good before shot for me. I didn't even bother doing my hair this morning since my first errand was our hair appointment. And, since the high was in the mid 80's today, I decided to splurge and wear jeans. At one point, I regretted my decision. But for most of the day, jeans worked out great. And it made me feel more like it was actually fall!

Shirt: Old Navy Maternity
Jeans: Old Navy Maternity
Necklace: PacSun
Shoes: H&M

I threw in that side shot not to show you how short my maternity shirts are looking on me, but to show you how small my butt is looking. I love it. I always feel like I have such a large one and think it looks cute looking all small compared to such a large belly.

And now my new hair. Its hard to tell, but I did get a good amount cut off. It is long enough in the front to tuck behind my ears, but short and layered in the back...maybe 2 or so inches long.

And now for Connor...

Shirt: GAP
Shorts: Old Navy
Shoes: Target

Connor was such a man getting his hair cut today. I was so proud of him. And he now has a proper hair cut again, and not just one his mom gave him! Its cute. A proper little boy hair cut.

Once again, it has been another fun fashion week. Thanks to Emery over at Moms are for Everyone for always hosting these great events. Its always fun reconnecting with some great bloggers out there and seeing what some of my blogger friends wear.

Connor Got His Hair Cut

Before:

Its been a while since Connor got his hair cut. Part of it is because of how much he hates getting his hair cut. Ok, so that is pretty much the whole reason. But I was getting fed up with his hair. Sometimes it could look adorable...a little surfer boy. But most of the time it looked either like a Donald Trump comb over or an unkept mess. The other evening I decided to do something about it.

I cut his hair myself. In order to distract him, I set Connor at the sink. That way he could play in the water. And it worked. However, it was difficult to get him to stay still enough to cut his hair, but I managed. I didn't even bother cutting the layers in his hair because I knew I would screw that up. But, I managed to get all the exterior - his bangs, around his ears and in the back. And I must admit, it looks much better. Next time he will need a professional haircut so layers can actually be cut in his hair, but I must say, I think I did a dang good job.

After:

Remember how I said Connor didn't want to sit still when I was cutting his hair? He didn't want to sit still for "after" pictures either!

My Hair

**Sorry for being absent these past few days. Sickness has struck our household and it hasn't been fun. If this tells you anything, I slept for 13 hours last night!

I got my hair cut the same day Connor got his done. After all the trauma done to Connor, my mom took him home so I could get my hair cut in peace. You may or may not know this, but I don't like getting my hair cut. I hate the weird chit chat, though that was solved by having a friend cut my hair. And I am always worried about my hair turning out horrible. This is what I ended up with:

After trying numerous times, I have come to the conclusion that all the self portraits I take of myself look like drivers license photos. But, at least my smile doesn't look forced in this picture, like it did in some of the reject photos.

But back to my hair. I really like the shortness of the back of my hair, but I am not loving the front. I feel like it makes me look like I have a mushroom head or something. I think next time I will keep my hair short in the back, but have the bangs be longer. Of course, the other problem may be that my hair seems uber curly after moving back home. I don't know if it the weather, the water or the fact that I had to change hair products, but something has definitely changed.

And because I actually got dressed in a cute outfit (i.e. not jeans) today, I thought I would celebrate by sharing a crappy iphone picture with you.

Connor Drama

The aftermath...at least his ears aren't blocked by hair anymore

Connor got his hair cut today...for the fourth time. But, something was different today.

The way he reacted, you would think he was physically able to feel

every
single
hair
being
cut

The kid was drama. Every time the comb touch his head, he would start to scream. Serious screams, in the middle of a fancy salon. Talk about embarrassing. Then we would calm him down and give him a distraction. And every time, I somehow thought the distraction would work. But it never did. In the end, I had to pin him down hold him like a baby (tightly, so he couldn't move) so his hair could finish being cut. The hairdresser (who is an old friend) said she was sure it was the worst hair cut she has ever given. But, I would say, under the circumstances, she did great. Connor on the other hand...that boy is drama!

Look what Daddy Did!

Daddy did Connor's hair this morning! It looked totally cute and lasted all of 10 minutes...and made me realize that it is about time for Connor to get another hair cut.

Also, I am amazed how hair makes a baby look so grown up. I have seen baby boys the same age as Connor without any hair and it makes them look like babies. That full head of hair Connor has makes him look so old for his age. And yes, I realize I sound ridiculous saying he looks old for his age!

The Hair Situation

My hair has been getting longer and longer...it has a tendency of doing that for some reason. I hadn't had it cut since February when I was home. But I greatly dislike getting my hair cut. Honestly. The uncomfortable conversation, the close contact with a stranger. It is all very awkward to me. But, I knew I had to do something. Ian's barber is really nice so I asked if she does womens hair. Turns out she does. So that is where I went. The conversation was easy and my hair looks great. Oh, and it was so much freaking cheaper than getting it cut at a normal salon. So stellar!

So hear it is, styled both straight and curly. I think I look more grown up with straight hair. Curly hair suits my personality and takes way less time to do.

I think my smile looks forced in the picture with curly hair. Not sure why. Oh well...still love my shorter hair.

Straight Hair

Today I decided to straighten my hair. For some reason I decided to take a bath last night. And since I was still clean this morning, I decided to use my "shower time" to straighten my hair. With my hair all nice and straight, I realized two things:

1. My hair is far too long! Seriously. It is down to my shoulders. I need to get it cut...it has only been six months since my last haircut! Alas, I HATE getting my haircut, so I will have to muster up the courage to do it. I know I will be happy I did it afterward. I just don't do well with the awkwardness to talking to a semi-stranger for an hour.

2. I look far too sophisticated/grown up with my hair straight. I think the curly hair suits me...probably because my personality is a little curly! It doesn't mean I don't like how I look with it straight. I do, just not for every day.

My Hair

While I was at home, I parted ways with a good foot of my hair. And, for those of you that care to know, I donated the hair. I must admit, donating my hair wasn't my first thought, but I felt guilty and decided to donate it after someone (oh, you know who you are!) brought it up. But back to my hair.

The haircut has received mostly rave reviews, but some people haven't hid their true feeling about the hair very well. When my mom first saw it, she gave me the most awful look. She has tried to deny it, but I have Chandra as my witness on that one! Anyway, today I had a funny encounter about my hair with a regular customer at my store. This family lives right behind my store and drops in a couple times a day.

Regular Customer (RC): OMG, look at your hair! It looks so great!
Me: Thanks!
Regular Customer's 5-year-old Daughter (RCD): I liked your hair better before.
Me: Ummm, thanks RCD for telling me like it is.
RC: RCD, that's not a nice thing to say. Women like complements.
RCD: But I'm being honest, I did like it better before.

Oh kids, they certainly don't do a good job of hiding their true feelings! And about my haircut, I love it, and isn't that the only opinion that really matters?!?
