A Walk in the Rain

We went for a walk in the rain a few days ago for several reasons. One is, I love the rain and I love being out in the rain and I figured the kids would too. Spoiler alert, they did! But I also went out then because I figured no one would be out. And I was correct. We live right by this amazing walking/biking path. But I have had to avoid it because during social distancing, it has been covered in people and that, my friends, is not social distancing. I saw this funny meme the other day saying it's a good thing the virus doesn't travel sideways. Seriously though. People walk right next to each other, not even thinking about six feet. Oh well. Let me get off my soap box.

Rain. I love the rain. Kids love puddles. While walking, it turned into a significant downpour and we decided to turn back toward home. Mostly because I didn't want to get super far from the house in the pouring rain and have a kid meltdown about it. Anyway, the walk home took a long time, as the kids played in the puddles. Isla jumped in every puddle she saw, filling her boots and soaking herself. Callum rode his trike through them. Willa slept in her stroller the whole time, haha! Both Callum and Isla had to be drug home, as they didn't want to stop playing. But, as any good play in the rain sesh goes, it ended with warm showers and comfy clothes.

We haven't got much rain this year and this fun walk in the rain made me sad that we didn't. Rain just bring the best smells, the coziest of the cozys and fun play times...also, it keeps California out of a drought.

Rain!?

About a week or so ago we had this weird substance fall from the sky. It would have really puzzled us had we not encountered the same stuff on our vacation this past summer. Because, you see, it really just doesn't rain enough here in Modesto...which is obviously the reason California is perpetually in a drought!

Well, my kids were pretty dang excited for the couple hours of rain we got. They instantly ran into the backyard to play. In fact, Callum played for so long, we finally had to drag him in for dinner. But they, Callum especially, had oh so much fun running and biking around in the rain.

I personally enjoy rain myself and wish we got more of it. When we do get it, it usually just lasts for a couple hours. And I feel totally jipped when it only rains at night and I miss the whole thing. I enjoy being able to cuddle up at home during a dreary day, then bundling up in our gear when we have to go out somewhere in it. My poor wellies sit sadly in my closet much of the year, completely unused.

But for a couple hours on a day in October, we had rain. Hopefully it won't let months and months pass again before it makes an appearance.

Rainy Day, Stay Today

We like rain around here. What can I say? And we get far too little of it. I love how it sounds when the rain hits my car. I love curling up under a blanket listening to the rain. I love wearing my wellies out in the rain. And I love, love, love watching the kids play in the rain.

A little side note. So, I lined our front walkway with these big pinwheels this past weekend. Someone told me they thought the first two I put up weeks ago were a joke, so were shocked by the addition. Hahahaha! I guess the joke is on them! But you should see them all spinning in the wind. It instantly brings a smile to my face.

But back to the rain. Do you see the rain coming down in these pictures? You can mostly tell where the black front door is. Callum was having so much fun running down our front path over and over in the pouring rain. Then we moved it to the backyard, where I let him play until he was thoroughly soaked through. He jumped in every puddle he could find. He played in the water that had pooled up in his water table. He jumped, kicked and played with his hands. And every time I asked if he wanted to come in, he would say no. When I would ask if he was cold, he would wrap his arms around himself and say, "cold", yet still refused to come in. But, eventually I just took him in and let him warm up in a bubble bath.

There's just something magical about rain.

What Can I say, We Love the Rain

I know what you are thinking, "I have never known anyone to document every single time it rains!?" Well, now you know me. Be happy we are in a drought and it doesn't rain that much. Actually don't be happy about the drought. Not only does it truly suck, but if it rained all the time, it may actually get mundane to me and I would stop posting about it every time it happened. Notice I said I would stop posting about it…I didn't say I would stop sending the kids out to play in it or stop taking pictures of them doing so…because, well, I am a rain lover.

Yesterday it started raining so hard that I hurried the kids to the front door to check it out. Immediately Connor got decked out in his rain gear. It was POURING. The kind where immediately everything is flooding. Even the patio wasn't safe. In the middle of this madness, Connor just slowly walked and watched. After a few minutes, he said he was ready to come inside. He was soaked. Then Isla was ready for some fun. She plays different than Connor. She trudged through the puddles that had so quickly formed in the planters. She took the umbrella and turned it upside down under the overflowing rain gutter. She kicked water. She held her hands in the air and tried to catch it. She stayed out in the rain much longer than Connor…though admittedly, it had slowed down into a normal rain by that point.

These kids. I love that they are up for an adventure. I love that they don't care if they get soaking wet. I love that they just play, the way they each individually want to play, until they are done. I hope they never lose the love of playing in the rain.

rain

I truly love rain. I feel like it brings both a physical and mental cleansing with it. Not to mention that it leaves me feeling refreshed. I sometimes wonder if I was born/raised/choose to live in the wrong place, given that I love rain so much. I love the way it sounds when I am cuddled up under blankets in my house. I love how it sounds hitting the car. I love windshield wipers. I love watching rain make ripples at it hits puddles.

I was talking to another mom the other day and she was talking about her kids going stir crazy when it was raining. I was going to suggest throwing them out in the rain to run around until they are soaked through, but then I remembered that not everyone loves the rain as much as I do. Oh, and warm baths and footed pjs are the best after a good romp in the rain too. Of course, that is for the kids. I myself enjoy a hot cup of coffee while they are warming up in the bath.

Oh, and I'm happy to report that I found this red rain coat to replace the yellow one Connor finally outgrew after three years. Lots of great rain play memories in that coat, but now we have a new one to make memories in. Crisis averted.

Hip, Hip Hooray for Rain

It's no secret that I love rain. The problem is, with the drought in California, there hasn't been much of it the past couple years. And, well, that kind of kills me. Thankfully, we are having a good few days of rain here. Like good rain. The kind you can hear when you wake up in the morning. Aww, there is nothing like being cuddled up in bed listening to the rain. The kind where you can see the drops plopping in the puddles from your window. I just love it. I love it so much.

With it being a chill out around the house kind of day yesterday, I was practically begging the kids to go out in the rain and play. Ok, I wasn't practically begging, I was legitimately begging. What can I say...I love an excuse to run around in the rain! My kid who is always up for playing in the rain downright refused to play in the rain. Finally I drug both kids out to sit on the patio with me and watch the rain. It took all of 10 seconds for Isla to be out playing in the rain. You know that made this mama a happy gal.

And play Isla did. She was having so much fun jumping in the water, kicking it around and getting all sorts of wet. Isls was so wet that I could hear the water sloshing around IN her boots when she would walk. After about half an hour, and being completely soaked through, I finally made Isla come in. By made, I mean I picked her up kicking and screaming. But the girl was completely soaking wet, down to her underwear. It literally looked like she had showered fully dressed. But she had fun and I had fun...because, you know, RAIN!

Here's to hoping we get more rain this year than last because I could really get used to this whole waking up to the sound of rain thing...and playing in it, always the playing in it.

Finally Some Rain

I waited all winter for the rain to come and of course it waits until spring has sprung to make an appearance (well, a decent appearance). After what has virtually been a rainless winter, rain is in the forecast for the forceable future.  Don't think I am complaining, because I am not. I love me some rain and California definitely needs it. BUT, we just bought new outdoor furniture last weekend and got it all set up. And it was 82 degrees just a few days ago. Now the cushions are stacked safely in the corner of the patio. If I didn't love the rain so much, I would be a little bummed out.

It was raining so hard during Connor's quiet time yesterday that I actually got him out to see it. Then he wanted to play in it and his rain boots were in the car. Like a good mom, I got drenched retrieving them for him.

Then the crazy kid just walked out and stared, allowing the rain to soak him...I tell you, this kid enjoys rain just as much as his mama. It was raining so hard, I was actually yelling for him to come under the porch and he kept responding with "No"...that is until he came to me and said, "I'm all wet. Put me in the bath."

^^ Look at the joy on that face!!!

Rain, don't you worry, I will enjoy you for as long as you stick around. But, maybe the rest of you should worry about me, because, well I am talking to rain!

Rain Play

It's no secret that I like rain. So this drought in California has kind of been killing me. Finally (seriously, FINALLY) we have had a few days of rain. It has been glorious. I love the sound of the rain when I am in my house and the sound when I am in the car. I love sitting on the porch watching the rain and I love playing in the rain with Connor and Isla. I just love it all. And thankfully, so do my cuties.

^^ Trying to catch the rain in his mouth

All the good puddles were in the middle of the street, so we went to the middle of the street to play. Like a paranoid madwoman, I kept looking back and forth making sure no cars were coming.

After we played for a while, I got out umbrellas for more fun. I could not believe how excited the kids got over umbrellas. Somehow both of the kids kept ending up on the ground with the umbrella under them. And Isla ended up loosing her umbrella privileges after banging the umbrella into the car a few too many times (sorry Ian).

And Connor thought it was great to hold the umbrella upside down. "Look at me mama, I funny." Yes kid, you are.

Sometimes I think it would be fun to live again where it rains all the time. But then I remember that I wouldn't be able to just send the kids in the backyard to play. AND, there really is nothing like the feeling of the sun on your face on a cool day. But, bring this up in the middle of summer, and I just may be ready to pack up and head for a rainier (and cooler) place!
