Exhaustion

That one word pretty much sums up my life lately. First it was Isla and all her sleep issues. One night last week she was waking up every 15 minutes for over an hour. I don't even know how that is possible. But now she seems to have leveled off and even gotten better. She is only waking once a night which is stellar for her. Then there's Connor...

On Saturday night, Connor didn't go to sleep until after 4am. The kid wanted to party and there was nothing we could do about it. Then, when sleep finally overtook him, he woke up hysterical to the sound of the neighbor's dogs barking. Connor goes crazy when he hears dogs bark. This time though, it was really bad. I think due to lack of sleep. We couldn't calm him down. Finally Ian took both the kids for a drive and sleep overcame them. Connor slept until after noon that day. However, he has been waking every morning in the five o'clock hour from the barking dogs. And he won't go back to sleep. And, what's keeping him from taking a nap as well? You guessed it...those dang barking dogs. And he always ends up waking Isla in the process of him not sleeping. Then I have two sleepy, high strung, on edge children to deal with. Awesome.

I have never lived anywhere where I have heard so many dogs bark. I have considered standing at my neighbor's front door and ringing the doorbell incessantly from 5:30am on just to get back at them. Just remember, I am not in my right mind. I haven't been getting like any sleep. Ian had to come home from work early one day because I had such a huge headache that it made me nauseous. I know it was from lack of sleep, but I don't know what to do about it.

Tonight, after the dogs keeping Connor awake and Connor subsequently waking Isla, I went into a tirade and moved a stereo into Connor's room and have music blasting. I am hoping this helps. I am praying this helps.

And I just thought I would prove that somehow through all this, we still manage to smile every once in a while...well at least the kids do. And since I can't resist their adorableness, I in turn smile too. I mean seriously, who can resist a two year old singing twinkle, twinkle little star?!

  1. Praying for you girly!! Sleepless nights are horrible with one child, I can't even imagine what it would be like with two!

Maybe you should go talk to your neighbors. Some people just leave their dang dogs all day! So annoying! Hope things get better.

    1. Thanks Lea! Ian went and paid a visit to our neighbor at 5:00 this morning after the dog barking all night long. Hopefully after Ian waking him and explaining to him that the dog kept waking our kids, he will now keep it inside.

  2. Oh no! How AWFUL! Those pictures are adorable but poor Jessica! I wonder... what if you put up one of those things that emits a high-pitched (i.e. annoying and only audible to dogs) noises every time they barked. It doesn't hurt them but it trains them not to bark... Would that work?

    1. Someone else mentioned one of those things too. I think I need to look into it. The only reason I am hesitant is my grandparents had one when I was growing up and I could hear it and it drove me crazy...I am pretty sure everyone already though I was crazy given that I said I could hear it!

  4. You poor thing! I just posted a very similar rant about my lack of sleep as well! We should form a support group, lol!

  5. I'm sure you've thought of this but would it help to maybe put something like a fan in Conner's b-room? I always sleep with one and you can't hear any of the dogs in the neighborhood with it going. Just a thought.

    1. Like a box fan or one that is louder? I am thinking I should do that. He has a ceiling fan but it doesn't really make any noise. The music seems to be helping though. He even is taking a nap today which hasn't happened in a while!

  6. You poor thing!! I have a love/hate with the dogs next door (both sides) it's nice because they bark at people walking by so I know when someone is coming to the door or walking down the street. But I hate it because they bark at EVERY ONE walking down the street ... ugh! We have a white noise machine in Allyson's room and it's been a life saver. Maybe something like that for Connor's room? Praying you get some sleep my friend.

    1. Where did you get your noise machine? I feel so confused about them for some reason.

  7. Girlfriend, I'm praying that a wonderful 12 hour coma will overcome your beautiful children around the 8pm hour. I'm so sorry. Being exhausted is noooo bueno.

And I'm all about the floor box fans. I grew up with one in my room to help with barking dogs and it always helped. My boys have a fan in eachnofntheir rooms and its fabulous for those noisy nights.
