To Nap or Not To Nap

...that IS the question!

Isla has been actually sleeping during nap time about 50% of the time, but I have been putting her down for a nap everyday anyway. I figure it is good for her to have some time to herself and notice even if she doesn't sleep, time alone seems to recharge her batteries a bit. However, I find myself in a conundrum.

Yesterday Isla napped...and she didn't go to sleep until almost 11 last night. She went to bed at 8, like normal, but didn't sleep. I tried many things before finally sitting in her room, holding her hand through the slats in her bed. While sitting there, I thought about how maybe, just maybe, I should stop her napping. Today Isla didn't nap. She was asleep by 7:15pm. Sure dinnertime doesn't go so well AND "the experts" say if the kid is melting down/tired before bedtime, they still need to nap. BUT, most days Isla is still awake when Connor is asleep for the night. That makes me think...maybe, just maybe, I need to start switching her over to quiet time instead of nap time.

And seriously, parents of those five year olds who take a three hour nap during the day, then are asleep right at 8, please TELL ME YOUR WAYS!!!

  1. Ugh - I have no advice for you, but I'm dreading that day. Taylor (same age as Isla) sleeps for 12 hours at night and still takes a 2-3 hour nap every day. But I know the day will come. And I'll come to YOU for advice!

  2. I wish I had advice. Landon still naps (and he's nearly 5) about 50% of the time (otherwise he has an hour of quiet time) and he still goes to bed by 7:30pm, but I honestly don't know why my kid needs so much sleep. (Parker seems to be the same way). I will say that the days I don't run Landon enough - my kids require lots of running and physical exertion - are the days he doesn't nap. He also naps better on days full of stimulation such as playdates or preschool. But it does seem Isla plays hard at the playground quite often so I maybe she's just one of those kids that doesn't require much sleep? At little one awake until 11 is so tough though. I wish you luck!

  5. Why don't kids understand how awesome naps are?! Seriously, I wish I had advice. My kids have given up naps. When Allyson gave up napping she was like that at dinner and it took a few weeks but then she was able to last until bed time. I think we moved bedtime up about a half hour. Good luck Jess!
