Lack of Sleep

Sometimes this whole parenting thing can be exhausting. And I don't mean just by running around after the kids all day. When one of the kids doesn't sleep, we don't sleep either. And it doesn't take long for that to catch up with us.

Connor cuddling with us on vacation

Lately Connor has really been fighting sleep. There are been nights that he literally stays up all night. Think until 4 or 5 in the morning. Last night, he finally went to sleep (or at least stayed in bed) at about 1. And here's my dilemma, I have a hard time getting to sleep, so I want to sympathize with him. Yet, at the same time, I need a break. I need my evenings. And I need him to sleep. Because he still wakes up early, then is in that hyper-disobedient-sleepy stage and that just isn't fun for anyone. Oh, and he seems too cool for napping lately.

While we were on vacation, we dealt with this situation by allowing him to stay up late and cuddling with him to help get him to sleep. Now we are home and I don't want to continue doing things this way.

Any wise mothers out there want to offer me advice? Or any sleep deprived ones want to offer me sympathy?

  1. I have sympathy for you!! Austin still isn't sleeping through the night. He's up every 2-3 hours, YAY..not. And last night Allyson woke up at 2,3,5 and then I had to wake her up to take her to drop off Aubrey and to MOPS. I can't wait until I'll be able to sleep again lol.

  2. I have a very hard time sleeping and generally am not in bed before 1am most nights. Thank goodness I am a SAHM. Abby & I have coslept probably 2 1/2 of her 3 short years. She doesn't have a set in stone bedtime but it's generally between 9-10pm. I hated the thought of doing the "cry it out" but we have had to do it a few times. I also had to put the doorknob cover on the inside of her bedroom door to train her to stay in her room at night, otherwise she will come out and find us in bed or where ever we are. I know it sounds a little harsh, but it has taught her to sleep in her room and one of us normally opens her door up early before she wakes up. Good luck! It's hard & frustrating for sure!

    1. It makes me feel better that I am not the only one who has faced this. I tried a doorknob cover on his door and he figured out how to bust it apart. Crazy kid! Someone else suggested that we turn his doorknob around and lock him in (as that is what they did with their kid). It sounded so harsh to me at the time, but I think I am quickly getting there!

  3. If it makes you feel better, I had to have a waterbed crib in order to sleep. How's that for spoiled?
