An Interview With Connor {6 years}

I didn't expect this, but I really had to keep at it with trying to get answers to these questions from Connor. He would answer "I don't know" to almost everything. And, a couple of the
questions I asked numerous times and finally just gave up because I couldn't get a response. Maybe this is a preview of the teen years…eek! Anyway, here's Connor at six years old from the perspective of Connor.

So many of my good conversations with Connor happen in the car. It's as if he thinks since he's strapped down and can't do anything, he may as well talk! Sometimes I wish I had a recording device, because as much as I try to remember all the funny things Connor says, sometimes they are gone by the time we get to where we are going. He certainly keeps me entertained. That's for sure.

C: Mom, did you put me in your mouth when I was a baby?
Me: No, why?
C: Well, how did I get in your tummy then?

If I didn't bring a toy (to show and tell) I would tell them all about my shoes. And I would tell them all about when I was born in Scotland.

Poor grumpy sissy.

(at the dinner table) Dad, how was your day at work? Did you make any new friends?

C: What's a donkey?
Me: A type of animal. What's a Connor?
C: A little boy who hurts his sissy if she comes in his room.

Why would Jesus make it rain on a school day?

Close the door, I want to be private.

C: I saw a statue!
Me: Really bud? That's cool.
C: Actually it was a man standing really still. I just kidding. That's funny.

C: Isla, if you want me to get off of you (he is sitting on her), you have to sing a song that you love me.
I: (singing) I love you, I love you, I love you...

Is spring when it's so nice? It's like the greatest day of everyone's life.

This kid likes to talk, talk, and talk some more. Often times it is questions. But he will also tell stories and they are always the cutest. Sure, I am his mom, so I am biased, but I think stories from little kids are just the best. Like when he starts out a story with, "Once upon a time, there was a little boy named Connor. He was five years old and born in Scotland." Hmmm, I wonder who he is talking about?! Enjoy some tidbits from Connor lately.

Give me some space

Connor: Can I play Mario? (on the wii)
Ian: Why?
Connor: So I can get some dad time.

I love picking my nose cause I don't like boogies in it.

Connor: I'm going to change my name when I am big cause Connor is just a boy name.
Me: What will your new name be?
Connor: Maybe I will be Papa Clive.

You need to not make muffins mom, because when you do, I want to eat all of them.

I like candy better than good food.

I don't like wearing clothes and shoes everyday because they look weird.

Where there's legos, there's Connor!

This kid simultaneously has me laughing my head off and pulling my hair out and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Conversations with Connor

The other day, while driving, there was a homeless man walking in the middle of the road with all of his worldly possessions in a shopping cart he was pushing. From the back seat, Connor said, "Mom, did you see that man? He really shouldn't be picking up trash in the middle of the road because a car could hit him." I am guessing Connor thought the man was picking up trash, because that really looked like what his cart was full of. This encounter opened the door for Connor and I to have a conversation about homeless people. At first, he couldn't grasp the concept...he probably still doesn't fully get it. He asked why the man would sleep on the street instead of in a "cozy bed". After I told him the man couldn't afford a home, he suggested the man stay in a hotel. Once I explained that hotels cost more than a home, he suggested that "he go to Lowes and buy the stuff and an oven and build his own house." Then I explained that stuff at Lowes costs money and the man just doesn't have any. Then Connor said, "I will build a house with an over and a bunch of food in the refrigerator and will say, "This house is free." Then the man can find a mom to live with him and they can have a sweet baby boy."

This kid! I tell you, he always has something to say. Then, there are the things he asks questions about. Sometimes they are so in-depth, or just things I don't ever think about, and they leave me stumped. Some of the things he says, I wonder where he picked it up. Other times, I guiltily know right where he learned it. That Connor, he is a cute kid with A LOT to say. Here are some of his recent funnies.

Are you kidding me?!

Cause that's how the cookie crumbles.

That will take forever...that will take until I die.

Stop playing with me sissy! I want to be lonely.

Don't make Connor sad.

Looking at Isla's poop, "Wow! She must have ate a ginormous food to make that big of a poop."

I have 10,000 energy. I'm never going to calm down until I get to Jesus.

I not kidding.

Why does McDonald's make food that is bad for you?

^^ It's not your imagination...Connor wears the same shirt almost every single day.

When will I be twenty ten? (also known as thirty)

To my sister in law: "How come you don't have a man? Where's your man?"

Asking for his cape to be tied in front, I said, "Like an apron?" and he responded, "Like a princess."

How come Uncle Jeremy doesn't have a girl? (notice a theme!)

I am pushing your buttons.

You have to sleep with me mama, it's really important.

I'm like twenty one old.

If you see a cop, stop and wait for it, so he can give you a ticket.

Talking to Ian about something, I said, "That was before we were married." and Connor chimed in, "But you've always been married."

When I was three, I did not like showers. Now that I am four, I like showers, not baths. (Of course, this whole love of showers thing is a new thing and didn't start right when he turned four, but you know.)

You will notice a trend, lots of talk about sissy, legos and Jesus. I guess those are the three things that consume his thoughts!

When sissy talks like me, then she can build legos with me cause then she won't take them apart.

Jesus turned water into wine, then all the fish died.

I don't think sissy likes ham like I like ham. It's good for little boys, maybe not girls. Maybe you can made a ham pie with ham inside, like apple pie.

While swinging Connor high, "My tummy's a little frightened."

When sissy gets big, she will be a mommy and I will be a daddy. Then we won't be kids anymore, we will be dalts (or adults...you know)

Maybe Jesus has a special lego store.

I'm getting old because we all get old.

When I asked Connor if they played on the playground at school, he said, "Sometimes we do and sometimes we don't when it's raining. That is just how life is."

He has now said "that is just how life is" about several things and every time it catches me off guard and makes me want to laugh. Such an adult thing coming from such a little person!

Documenting Life

I am really great at taking pictures and making sure to write updates about the kids on my blog. But, I am not so great about making sure to preserve those memories in ways my kids could look back on...because lets be honest, who knows if blogspot will even be around when my kids are older?!

I've made photo books for certain years before (ok, really only two years), but haven't done it consistently. And I made photo books documenting the first month of each kid's life, but that's it. After I started the series from the mouth of Connor, I knew that I wanted to find a way to more permanently (and personally) document those things. Enter this cute photo book.

This book is from Paper Coterie (who's website currently doesn't seem to be working and I am hoping that doesn't mean they are no longer around). It was a template and all I had to do was upload some pictures of Connor. It is full of tons of space to write down all the adorable things Connor says.

I love that it is something that Connor will have that actually is written down. So much these days is typed out. It really just adds a personal touch that I like.

Though I am sure Connor's wife will get more of a kick out of the crazy things he said as a kid than he will (I'm just generalizing how Ian and I are) I still like that they are documented in a fun and easy way.

I really want to get better at preserving memories for my kids. I loved going through my baby album when I was younger. I loved looking at the pictures and reading what my mom wrote. My mom then made albums for us when we were in school too. I want my kids to have the same memories documented for them too...and not just on a website somewhere.

This kid sure keeps me on my toes with the things he says. Some of them, though funny, are even too inappropriate for the blog. By inappropriate, I mean would embarrass me, so you know. Kids speak truth, right?! Here are some of the things Connor has said lately:

Look at me. I am batman. I believe I can fly.

I like car accidents on the freeway. (Uhh, what?!)

While Connor was going in for a kiss on my lips (we kiss cheeks around here):
Me: Where did you learn that from?
Connor: From daddy, but he only likes it with you.

I need to watch tv. It will make me feel better.

Jumping on the bed, Connor said "I'm trying to exercise."

This is my minion. He's a fake minion. You can make a voice for him cause he doesn't have a voice.

While driving down the road:
Me: Connor want me to go fast?
Connor: Not very fast cause I don't want you to get a ticket.

Mamas and daddies don't have schools, they only have churches.

Because who doesn't want some funny pumped into their Monday afternoon?! And a Monday afternoon that comes after a four day weekend, none-the-less.

Some of the things that have come out of the mouth of Connor lately:

Mama, you have much long hair.

When I'm a big boy I'll get daddy's clothes because I will be too big for my little boy clothes.

It started smelling while driving and Connor said "Did you fart mama?" Seriously little boy?! Every bad smell you come across is not from your mother!!!

Why is daddy at work? The sun is not up. He should be in bed with us.

(Touching his birthday on the calendar) I'm touching my birthday.

We should put a sign up at Papa and Memaw's house that says no Riley dogs. Then Riley can come live with us and sleep with me and kiss me.

Why do my feet hurt? Maybe because last night I was getting bigger, bigger, bigger!

The thing about sissy is she talks different than me.

(Connor said this to me) I love you all the time, but sometimes I don't like you. Aren't you too young to say things like this kid?!

Happy Monday everyone!!! Monday's aren't bad for me anymore, but when I worked, they totally sucked. So I hope these Connorisms made your Monday a little more bearable.

From the Mouth of Connor {three}

Loudly, in a stinky public restroom, Connor exclaimed, "Mama, who pooped and made it stink?"

Riley eat me, then got to Papa and Memaw's, poop me out and I stay there forever.
** Riley is Papa and Memaw's dog

I have little hair here and here (points at arms), but I have big hair on my head.

After I gave Connor a piece of gum:
Connor: Daddy would not be happy I have gum.
Me: Should I call and tell him?
Connor: No, He will just not be happy when he comes home.

When I get bigger, I'm going to work at the gym and teach sissy how to swim all by herself.
**Says the kid who hates getting in the pool!

Playing with my nose ring:
Connor: Does it keep your nose from getting boogies?
Me: No, just makes my nose look pretty.
Connor: NOOOOO!!!

I like M&M's. They are goooood for my tummy.

And one of Connor's new favorite things to say to me pretty much every time he gets in trouble:
I want you to stop saying that to me!

That kid! He's always keeping me on my toes.

Conversations with Connor

Connor starts all sorts of interesting/deep/funny conversations lately. I enjoy them. I enjoy talking with him rather than to him. I enjoy his curiosity and perspective about things. For instance, the kid just will not let go of the fact that one of our smoke detectors sits uncovered and battery-less. He brings it up numerous times a day...so can you fix it already Ian?! But sometimes the things he says can really throw me for a loop. Like that awkward moment when he told me I won't go to heaven.

Connor: What will happen to me when I die?
Me: Why don't you tell me what will happen?
Connor: I will go to heaven with Jesus.
Me: Yep.
Connor: What will happen to you when you die?
Me: I will go to heaven and be with Jesus too.
Connor: No you won't.

I decided not to ask where he thought I would go! I don't think Connor knows about hell and I am pretty sure he was joking, but still!

I really am enjoying this phase. Hearing him talk more about his likes and dislikes. Him learning about the world and wanting to talk about it. The kid was enamored with the "bad guy" we saw in the back of a cop car the other day. He wanted to ask to see the handcuffs that were on the bad guy. I told him no on that one. But its things like that, him knowing that a bad guy has handcuffs on. His little brain is a sponge and he is learning all these new little things every day. I love it...though I could do with less of the whining he now does (yeah, the whining is a new phase...one I hope that passes quickly). But you know, everything can't be sunshine and rainbows all the time!

From the Mouth of Connor {two}

Just a little fun to brighten your Monday. This kid seriously comes up with the funniest things all the time...like constantly asking for Isla to be put down for a nap so he can play alone! But here are some of his recent one (or two) liners:

I like doggies. I like it when they sleep.

I know how to hunt in the jungle.

My brother said to Connor, "No way, Jose!" and Connor said back, "I not Jose. Jose is at JJ's house." (JJ is our neighbor and Connor's friend. Jose is his grandpa.)

Connor called me "babe" so I asked him who he hear's call me babe and he said "daddy". Talk about making my heart swoon.

Connor closed his eyes and said "When I have black eyes, I can't see."

A friend of mine asked Connor:
What does Connor do? Play
What does daddy do? iPad
What does mommy do? Laundry
What does Isla do? Play

Connor says to Isla when she crys "Be happy sissy!"

Connor got in trouble and said to me, "Don't say anything to me!" Yep, the teenager in him is already making its way out.

From the Mouth of Connor

Connor's gotten to that stage where some of the funniest things come out of his mouth, unintentionally. Until I finally get around to ordering this cool "quotable" book from Paper Coterie, I have just been pulling out my phone and putting them in there, so I remember. And some of the things he says are just too dang funny not to share. So here you go.

Randomly one morning, Connor said "I like sissy. I want her to stay." A couple hours later he followed up with "I like sissy for a while, but I do not like her anymore."

Connor: "Where's Gary?"
Me: "Who's Gary?"
Connor: "From Papa and Memaw's desto house." (Gary would be my parents neighbor)
Me: "He's probably at work or something."
Connor: "Or he's in his backyard watching his cat go potty."
**Oddly enough, my mom informed me that Connor loves to spy on Gary in his backyard from the second story of my parents house. It seems I have a little creeper on my hands!

While sitting on the toilet, Connor asked, "What would happen if I pooped on my lego man?"

Running toward the bathroom, Connor was yelling over and over, "No pee-pee, no!"

Connor: "Who's it happy mother's day for?"
Me: "All the mamas. Who's your mama?"
Connor: "Jess!"
Me: "Who's Jess?"
Connor: "A mama."

While driving the other day I hear, "Put your hand right there sissy...cause I want to step on it and see what happens."

I said to Isla, "Look at your hair! You are a hot mess." Then Connor said, "I am a cold mess."

Never a dull moment around here and I love it! Though I wouldn't mind if Connor decided to go to bed a little earlier...at midnight last night, Connor was crying from his bed, "I want to play!" That kid has more energy than Ian and I combined!
